About Hamzanwadi University

Universitas Hamzanwadi is a higher education institution located in Pancor, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, and is widely known as the Campus of Struggle. This identity is deeply rooted in the Islamic values, spirit of perseverance, and sincerity inherited from the founder of Nahdlatul Wathan Diniyah Islamiyah (NWDI), Maulana Syaikh TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid. These fundamental values shape the character of the entire academic community as individuals who are faithful, knowledgeable, ethical, and resilient in advancing knowledge and contributing to the welfare of society. The university’s long-term vision “To Become a Globally Competitive Institution Based on Santri Culture” (2041) reflects this enduring commitment.

Historically, Universitas Hamzanwadi emerged from the merger of two major institutions, STKIP Hamzanwadi Selong and STT Hamzanwadi, as mandated by the decree of the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (SK Menristekdikti No. 428/KPT/I/2016). This consolidation marked a significant transformation in the institution’s trajectory, leading to rapid growth into a comprehensive university with eight faculties and a graduate school overseeing 28 academic programs. This development underscores the university’s strategic role in providing higher education that is adaptive to contemporary demands while remaining grounded in the scholarly traditions of the pesantren.

In implementing the tridharma of higher education, Universitas Hamzanwadi affirms four foundational institutional values. First, global competitiveness, whereby the university aligns its academic processes with international quality standards, strengthens global networks, enhances research capacity, and prepares graduates to compete nationally and internationally. Second, santri-based culture, which emphasizes religiosity, modesty, discipline, and noble character (akhlakul karimah) as the moral foundation of learning, governance, and campus life. Third, innovation and independence, reflected in the development of an academic ecosystem that is creative, productive, and driven by research, technology, and social entrepreneurship. Fourth, relevance and sustainability, ensuring that all academic and community engagement activities respond to societal needs, labor market demands, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The academic structure of Universitas Hamzanwadi consists of eight faculties—namely the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Faculty of Languages, Literature and Humanities, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, and other relevant faculties—along with the Graduate School. All programs are developed based on the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework and are aligned with the national Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy to ensure that graduate competencies meet the needs of the twenty-first century.

Multiple strategic strengths reinforce the position of Universitas Hamzanwadi. Its identity—shaped by the core values of NWDI cultivates integrity and strong moral character among students and faculty. The academic staff demonstrate significant progress in their qualifications, supported by scholarship schemes and accelerated professional development. The university also maintains extensive national and international collaborations with government agencies, universities, industries, and foreign partners. Furthermore, digital advancements—such as the Learning Management System, learning analytics, and the Electronic Good University Governance (E-GUG) platform—enhance modern institutional governance. A religious and conducive campus atmosphere further supports the cultivation of students’ intellectual and spiritual identities as santri-scholars.

In the area of student development, the university provides various programs to foster competence, talent, and character, including Student Activity Units (UKM), the General English Program for new students, tahfidz scholarships, and other financial support mechanisms. The implementation of the Rencana Kegiatan Ekstrakurikuler (RKE), or Extracurricular Activity Plan, strengthens students’ non-academic profiles as an integral component of character formation, independence, and employability.

The university’s implementation of the tridharma is guided by well-defined policies and strategic development plans. In education, Universitas Hamzanwadi adopts OBE–MBKM curricula, digital and blended learning models, and the development of international-class programs. In research, the university promotes collaborative studies, establishes Centers of Excellence (CoE) in each faculty, and increases high-quality publications and patent applications. In community service, the university implements the Hamzanwadi Foster Village Model, teaching factory initiatives, and programs on economic empowerment, digital literacy, and social entrepreneurship.

Institutional governance is carried out using the principles of Good University Governance (GUG), prioritizing accountability, transparency, policy coherence, and procedural effectiveness. Internal and external quality audits are conducted regularly, while digital transformation is strengthened through the E-GUG system, which integrates institutional planning, reporting, and evaluation. The governance structure includes the University Senate, Board of Trustees, Advisory Council, Internal Quality Assurance Unit, Directorate of Research and Community Service, and other supporting bodies.

The long-term development agenda of Universitas Hamzanwadi is outlined in the 2025–2041 Roadmap, comprising three strategic phases. The first phase, Transformation (2025–2030), focuses on digitalization, curriculum modernization, and strengthening governance. The second phase, Expansion (2031–2035), emphasizes internationalization through global-class programs, expanded research collaboration, and the establishment of Centers of Excellence. The third phase, Stabilization (2036–2041), aims to achieve national and regional recognition, financial independence, and deeper integration of santri values into modern governance. By 2041, the university targets major achievements, including a national ranking in the Top 50, an Asia ranking in the Top 300, institutional “Excellent” accreditation, 100% doctoral-qualified faculty, a 40% increase in non-tuition revenue, and the full implementation of One Data University.

The entire institutional development agenda is grounded in the values of the Wasiat Renungan Masa (WRM) authored by Maulana Syaikh, which serve as ethical, spiritual, and operational guidelines. Values such as sincerity, honesty, patience, steadfastness, humility, moderation, and commitment to upholding the Qur’an and Sunnah are integrated into governance policies, curricula, student development, human resource management, and institutional performance indicators. Thus, Universitas Hamzanwadi continues to grow not only as an academically excellent institution but also as a center of moral struggle and civilizational development rooted in Islamic and Indonesian values.
