Our History: From Campus Life to a Global Ranking Powerhouse
UNIRANKS traces its origins to the early 1980s in the United States, where it began by evaluating a single but impactful metric: student life within universities. Initially focused on ranking institutions based on their extracurricular activities, student services, and campus facilities, it served as a guide for institutions to strengthen their non-academic offerings. The initiative stemmed from a larger organization supplying student-centered services, including housing, recreational programs, and activity-based learning.
In 2017, the vision for UNIRANKS expanded significantly with the launch of UNIRANKS.com, transforming the concept into a comprehensive, AI-powered global ranking engine. With the goal of ranking over 30,000 universities worldwide, UNIRANKS evolved into the largest university ranking platform in the world, harnessing Big Data and advanced analytics to evaluate more than 1.5 billion records covering institutions, students, faculty, and research outputs.
